Event Details

The Artangel Longplayer Conversation 2011 introduces two of the world’s foremost modern thinkers: climate-scientist and orignator of Gaia theory James Lovelock and political thinker and author John Gray, who will embark on a discussion inspired by the philosophical implications of long time.

An annual event, The Artangel Longplayer Conversation invites two cultural thinkers to engage in a free discussion inspired by the philosophical premise of Jem Finer’s Longplayer, a musical composition playing, in real time, over the course of an entire millennium. Commissioned by Artangel and launched in 2000, Longplayer suggests a projection of growth and change and a timescale beyond our lifespans.  Previous Longplayer Conversations have included Laurie Anderson and Doris Lessing; David Adjaye and Bruce Mau; Alain de Botton and George Soros and in 2009 to celebrate the tenth anniversary a 12-hour marathon talk with 24 writers, filmmakers, scientists, academics and technology activists.

John Gray has written several influential books on political theory.  He is perhaps best known for his critique of humanism in the book Straw Dogs.  His latest book , The Immortalization Commission: Science and the Strange Quest to Cheat Death, is published by Penguin in February 2011.

James Lovelock is the author of Gaia principle, a hypothesis formulated in 1960s which views the world holistically arguing that both the biosphere and physical elements of the earth integrate together to affect the earths climate creating a self-regulating system for survival.   Having worked at NASA developing methods for detecting life on Mars, he is also the inventor of the electron capture detector and the microwave oven.

Artangel is based in London but working across Britain and beyond, Artangel commissions and produces exceptional projects by outstanding contemporary artists. Over the past two decades, the projects have materialised in a range of different sites and situations and in countless forms of media. Each new project evolves from a singular commissioning process, born from an open-ended conversation with an artist offered the opportunity to imagine something extraordinary.
